The 7 Top-Rated, Fresh Dog Food Delivery Services

The Farmer’s Dog – Best (and Freshest) Dog Food Delivery Service Overall

The Farmer's Dog

The Farmer’s Dog is a dog food delivery service offering human-grade meals prepared fresh just days before delivery to your door. It’s basically a smarter, healthier alternative to highly processed, low-quality dog food. Using human-grade meats and vegetables, The Farmer’s Dog offers simple recipes designed just for dogs, guided by science, and prepared in USDA-certified facilities. The Farmer’s Dog exceeds nutritional standards for dogs set by AAFCO, and meals are designed by a veterinarian, pre-made, and pre-portioned to your pet’s specific caloric needs based on the profile information you provide. The food is delivered within days after cooking and is never frozen to ensure freshness and nutritional value. The recipes don’t include any “meal” products (like “chicken meal”) or preservatives, and they come pre-portioned and ready to serve.

Recipes Offered

The Farmer's Dog Recipe

The Farmer’s Dog offers three tasty recipes your pup will love, including:

  • Turkey
  • Beef
  • Pork

All of the ingredients in The Farmer’s Dog’s recipes are human-grade and are free of extreme processing and mystery ingredients. Instead, you’ll find plenty of nutritious ingredients including vegetables like parsnips, carrots, broccoli, sweet potatoes, spinach, fish oil, sunflower seeds, USDA beef liver, USDA pork liver, and more (specific ingredients vary by the recipe). While there is no information provided about whether any particular recipe is ideal for dogs with certain allergies, you’ll have the opportunity to provide information about your dog’s allergies while setting up your pup’s profile so that The Farmer’s Dog can recommend the best recipes for your pet.

Ease of Ordering

Like other dog food delivery services, ordering from The Farmer’s Dog is relatively simple. First, you’ll need to create a profile for your pup and enter information such as your dog’s breed, age, current weight, body shape, activity level, current diet, and other details. Then you’ll get a recommended plan that you can customize by removing any recipes that you don’t want for your dog.

Pricing & Scheduling Options

The Farmer’s Dog prices range from $2 to $12 per day, based on your dog’s profile and nutritional needs and your preferences. For a 25-pound, 6-year-old mixed breed dog, a Full Meals plan costs $29.78 per week. For a 70-pound, 6-year-old mixed-breed dog with a moderate activity level, the Full Meals plan costs $70.14 per week.

JustFoodForDogs – Best Dog Food Delivery Service with a Large Variety of Recipes

JustFoodForDogs

JustFoodForDogs was founded in response to the founder’s discovery that many dog food recipes are packed with a variety of questionable, but completely legal ingredients that are harmful to dogs’ health. The company has set out on a mission to transform the dog food industry by assembling a team of veterinarians and other specialists to create a variety of scientifically-backed, whole-food recipes for dogs.

Each meal has gone through evidence-based research at a major university and meets National Research Council (NRC) standards. The company proudly boasts a Nutrition Research Advisory Board with thirteen veterinarians, including eight board-certified specialists. JustFoodForDogs has also made a strong commitment to transparency, and to this end publish a complete nutritional profile for each of their meals, so you can see exactly what ingredients are in each meal.

JustFoodForDogs ships to all 50 US states (the company also ships to Canada, but orders are limited to dry goods). It’s worth keeping in mind that you can save on shipping costs by picking up your order up for free in one of the company’s many shops. While you’re at it, you may want to schedule a free consultation with one of their Certified Nutrition Consultants. If you can’t drop into their stores but want to speak to one of their Consultants, you can even schedule a remote consultation!

JustFoodForDogs meals are all fresh frozen and are ready to eat after thawing. If you’d like your dog to reap the rewards of the company’s whole-food meals but want to cook them yourselves, their homemade DIY meals are a great option for you. If you’re after some meals you can store in the pantry, consider their preservative-free PantryFresh products, which have a shelf life of up to two years.

Pet Plate offers four delectable recipes your dog is sure to love, including:

  • Barkin’ Beef
  • Chompin’ Chicken
  • Lip Lickin’ Lamb
  • Tail Waggin’ Turkey

The Chompin’ Chicken recipe is ideal for dogs with sensitive stomachs as well as those who are carrying a bit of extra weight around their waistline, while the Lip Lickin’ Lamb recipe is a great option for dogs who are sensitive to other protein sources, dogs with itchy skin or dull coats, and pups who are in need of a little extra energy.

Ease of Ordering

Dog food delivery is easy with Pet Plate. Create a profile for your pet and enter some basic information such as your dog’s sex, whether your pet is spayed or neutered, your dog’s breed, birth date (or a close estimate if you’re not sure), current weight, ideal weight, activity level, and preferred recipe. You can choose up to four recipes for each box.

Pricing & Scheduling Options

Pet Plate prices start at less than $3.00 per day. We created a meal plan for two different dogs to get a better idea of Pet Plate’s pricing. Ollie – Most Customizable Dog Food Delivery Service

Ollie

Ollie is another dog food delivery service offering personalized, fresh-made meals for your pup. Meals are customized based on your dog’s age, weight, ideal weight, breed, activity level, allergies, and other information. Ollie sources human-grade ingredients from family-run farms in the United States and Australia, including high-quality meats, fruits and vegetables that are cooked gently in order to preserve nutrients. Ollie’s vet-formulated recipes also include superfoods like chia seeds, which are rich in omega-3 fatty acids to support your pup’s skin and coat health, and never include any by-products, artificial flavors, or preservatives.

Recipes Offered

Ollie - Tasty Lamb Fare

Ollie offers four delicious recipes formulated by a veterinarian, including:

  • Hearty Beef Eats
  • Chicken Goodness
  • Healthy Turkey Feast
  • Tasty Lamb Fare

All four recipes meet the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles for all life stages, including the growth stage for large breeds that reach 70+ pounds as an adult. The Tasty Lamb Fare recipe is well-suited for most pups with allergies and those with sensitivities to other protein sources like beef and chicken.

The meals are not individually packaged, but they do come with custom feeding guidelines so you can be sure your pup is getting just the right amount of food.

Ease of Ordering

Ollie has a similar ordering process as other dog food delivery services. First, you’ll set up a profile for your pet, including details such as your pet’s birth date (month and year), breed, activity level, current weight, current diet (dry food, wet food, raw, etc.), primary protein, and any known allergies. Then, Ollie calculates your dog’s dietary needs and recommends a plan, including a recipe recommendation based on the protein that’s best-suited for your pup. You can either opt for the recipe Ollie recommends or choose a different recipe. From there, you can choose from one of three plan levels:

  • All Ollie – if you plan to feed your pet 100% Ollie
  • Mostly Ollie – for a 50/50 mix with your pup’s current diet (ideal for the transitioning phase)
  • Some Ollie – enough Ollie to comprise about 25% of your dog’s diet

The profile setup process is easy to use and intuitive, and the multiple plan options make it easy to gradually transition your dog to a complete Ollie diet over the course of a few weeks to avoid digestive upset.

Pricing & Scheduling Options

As mentioned, there are three plan levels available, each at a different price point. For a 25-pound, mixed-breed dog with a low activity level, pricing for the beef recipe is as follows:

  • All Ollie: $30.76/week
  • Mostly Ollie: $20.41/week
  • Some Ollie: $16.23/week

For a larger dog, using our 70-pound, mixed breed example pup with a moderate activity level, Ollie’s pricing for the Hearty Beef Eats recipe is as follows:

  • All Ollie: $69.90/week
  • Some Ollie: $22.91/week

Based on the information we entered for our large breed example dog, we weren’t given a “Mostly Ollie” plan option.

Ollie meals should be stored in the refrigerator for up to 14 days unopened, and up to 5 days after you’ve broken the seal (be sure to put the Ollie resealable lid on the tray for any opened packages to preserve freshness). Ollie meals can also be stored in the freezer, although the company doesn’t specify for how long. Frozen meals should be defrosted in the refrigerator for 24 hours before serving them to your pup. Shipments arrive every 6 weeks, so you’ll need to store some meals in the freezer.

Sign up today to get 50% off your first box from Ollie.

What We Like:

  • Personalized meals to meet your dog’s nutritional needs
  • Human-grade ingredients
  • No by-products, artificial flavors, or preservatives

  • Hand-packaged meals

Meal plans are personalized to your dog’s unique needs based on your pup’s weight, breed, age, and lifestyle, meeting the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles for all life stages. Offering three recipes containing minimal ingredients and free of common allergens like gluten and soy, Spot & Tango uses only ingredients that are approved for human consumption, ensuring that your pup is only receiving the highest-quality ingredients with the nutritional content she needs.

Recipes Offered

Spot & Tango Turkey & Red Quinoa

Spot & Tango offers three delicious recipes, including:

  • Turkey & Red Quinoa
  • Beef & Millet
  • Lamb & Brown Rice

Both the Turkey & Red Quinoa and the Beef & Millet recipes are gluten, grain, wheat, soy, and corn free, while the Lamb & Brown Rice recipe is gluten, wheat, corn, and soy free. All are suitable for dogs on a minimal-ingredient diet, and the three recipes allow you to select an option that’s free of any ingredients your dog is sensitive or allergic to. 100% of the ingredients used in all recipes are suitable for human consumption, and the meals contain no preservatives, growth hormones, or artificial additives.

Ease of Ordering

Spot & Tango’s ordering process feels a bit more personalized compared to other dog food delivery services on our list, primarily because when you first click the “Get Started” button, you’re presented a photo and an introduction to a “Pup Specialist” (Emily, in our case), with a greeting stating that she’s there to “help you create a personalized meal plan that’s perfect for your dog.” After that, though, the process feels pretty similar to the other dog food delivery services we’ve reviewed. You’ll be asked to enter information about yourself and your dog, including your pet’s birthday (Emily indicates that Spot & Tango will send your pup a gift!), body type (a little skinny, a little chubby, or just right), current weight, activity level, and any special health conditions (such as obesity, arthritis, or digestive issues). Then, Spot & Tango recommends a recipe for your dog but gives you more than one option so you can mix & match if you choose. The ordering process is straightforward and easy to navigate.

Pricing & Scheduling Options

Spot & Tango’s pricing starts at about $2 per meal. When we entered the information for our 25-pound, mixed breed sample dog, Spot & Tango recommended the Turkey & Red Quinoa recipe but also offered the Beef & Millet recipe as another option. In this case, prices are:

  • Turkey & Red Quinoa: $1.25 per meal
  • Beef & Millet: $1.34 per meal

When we choose both options to mix and match, our total costs are calculated:

  • Recommended Plan: $36.24 per week
  • Topper Plan: $20.74 per week (ideal for the transitioning phase)

When we go through the process using our 70-pound, mixed-breed sample dog, Spot & Tango recommends the same two recipes (Turkey & Red Quinoa and Beef & Millet) at the following prices:

  • Turkey & Red Quinoa: $2.92 per meal
  • Beef & Millet: $3.13 per meal

When we choose both options to mix and match, our total costs are calculated:

  • Recommended Plan: $84.71 per week
  • Topper Plan: $36.24 per week (ideal for the transitioning phase)

Meals should be stored in the freezer immediately after delivery and can be frozen for up to 6 months. Meals should be defrosted in the refrigerator or in warm water before serving them to your pup. After the food is defrosted and opened, it’s safe for consumption within 4 days.

Your first order is a two-week trial, after which your dog’s meals are delivered every four weeks. Shipping is free, and you can cancel or pause your subscription at any time by emailing [email protected]. Because meals are cooked fresh to order, you must email cancellation requests by 11:59pm ET on the day before your next order is processed.

Save 50% on your first order by signing up for Spot & Tango today.
